Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings – Video series

<p>For their Daata Editions commission the collaborative duo Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings have produced 6 short videos using material from the UK Gay Bar Directory - a moving image archive of gay bars in the UK.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>In the climate of the rapid gentrification of gay villages and the subsequent closure of many LGBTQI community spaces across the UK the artists believe that documenting these disappearing spaces is an important historical gesture and a strategy for resisting assimilation.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Filming the bars when they are empty with a discrete go-pro camera the artists reveal the complex and varied visual language employed by these spaces in their self-representation as gay. Working with sound producer Jan Piaseki the artists have produced soundscapes that sample field recordings, pop songs and natural phenomena including glaciers melting and ice caps cracking.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>The artists use audio to develop a sense of a complicated, erotic and critical geography that these bars are located within.</p>
