Introduction to Discord
2021-01-12 00:00:00
Did you know, Daata has an official Discord server? But what is Discord? Why is everyone downloading it? And how do you sign up?

Discord is a free text, video and voice app for chatting with like-minded groups of people. If you’ve ever used slack and video conferencing, you’ll be up to speed with the user interface. Unlike other forms of social media, it’s a place for gathering, sharing, debating and creating as a community. It’s been around since 2015, when it was mostly used by gamers, but since the pandemic - and the boom of NFTs - more and more galleries, collectives and crypto-businesses have taken to it. In 2020 alone, 50 million people joined.

Daata’s Discord community of artists, collectors and curators is going to play an important role in how we operate, shaping the gallery's future. More of our online programming is going to take place here, due to its high quality call features and community ethos. So for exclusive access to pre-sales, curatorial and editorial content and events, sign up today. Still unsure? Read our '10 reasons to join Discord'.

It’s really easy to join:

1. Head to discord.com/download on your phone or desktop to download the app for free (we recommend desktop!). Click download

2. Set up a username (anything you like! You can change it later, don’t worry)

3. Add friends. If you know anyone else on it, ask them for their username (don’t forget the 4 digit #XXXX). Add them by hitting the home button > Friends > Add Friend. Conversing with someone you don’t know is what Discord’s about, so don’t worry if you don’t have any friends (yet!)

4. Join the Daata discord server by hitting this url.
Tips for gaining confidence:

Explore our server channels

A server is the space an organisation or group operates within, while the channels are threads or conversation pages. Channels are where the magic happens, each one marked with a # down the left hand side. The Information channels tell you all about Daata and this server. The others are for you. Think there’s a channel missing? Let us know in #ideas-and-feedback.

Don’t be shy!

Introduce yourself in #-introduce-yourself. Try reacting to a message with an emoji. A great conversation starter is to share an article you’ve enjoyed, ask for recommendations or simply wish others ‘good morning!’.

FYI

All messages in servers are public but DMs are private. You can reply directly and react with an emoji by hovering on a message and clicking on the relevant icons.

Join other servers too!

Variety is the spice of life. Three of our faves are Feral File, Heni and She256.
