Trulee Hall likes to mix things up. Whilst Hall's multi-disciplinary practice stays true to her values, she's not afraid to try new mediums and explore alternative formats.

To celebrate the launch of her first ever foray into NFTs, Daata's Public Programme Curator Olivia Bright sat down with Hall to discuss what reinvention means to her.

What does Reinvention mean to you in the context of your practice?

As a creator or worlds, the excitement for me is in altering reality to make something new. It's a constant process of birth, death and rebirth. I love to create new versions of old ideas, riffing off of art history, mythologies and pop culture to reinvent my own revised, personally perverted and updated alternate interpretations of these multifaceted cultural references.

What’s your relationship with change?

I enjoy change. Many artists create the same things over and over again, I'm drawn to newness. For me the fun is in the experimentation. I start each artwork with a basic idea, jump in headfirst and then end up in a totally new place through trusting the process. I do have many concepts and symbols that are repeated throughout my work, but each time they reappear take on new meaning, becoming part of a different context.

Have there been any turning points in your career?

I've always known and embraced the feeling that I was "different". I did not have a simple or happy childhood, and my art career reflects my experience of constantly adapting to my changing circumstances. Each phase of my life and my work has been uniquely challenging. I've always known that I'm an artist, and I have always been ambitious. I consider myself a powerful witch, in a sweet way, and I take personal responsibility for my changing life situations, despite how much that happens in the world is out of my control. I consider my psychological/spiritual work deeply integrated with the broad range skills I've learned. So my resilience and relationship with change is what fuels my confidence to undertake huge projects. So, it's ALL part of a whole continuum that is my life. One turning point to the next.

From where you’re sitting, what impact is blockchain having on the contemporary art landscape?

I’m delighted to be working with Daata to release my first NFT. The marriage of art and blockchain is absolutely brilliant, totally practical, and based on core ideologies I agree with. Although my practice encompasses sculpture, paintings and installations, the most satisfying and all-encompassing mode of communication for me is video. Collecting video art through NFTs is a fantastic way of supporting practices like mine and ensures collectors are buying the real unique thing when they buy a video edition.

Trulee Hall's Daata commissioned film 'Two Heads, Two Ways' (2020) drops as an NFT on 5 May 2022 at 10amEST online and at NADA NYC.
